Fisheries

AMERICAN AQUATICS has a staff of experienced fishery biologists that regularly perform stream and lake assessments of fish populations. We can evaluate the relative health of a  stream by determining the numbers and species of fish that are present. This information is useful in assessing the impact (or lack thereof) of activities in or near the stream; recording the recovery of  the stream; or providing an initial assessment of the stream prior to some upcoming event. We also make management recomendations for the stream to meet our client needs for recovery, enhancement or maintenance.

Lakes and ponds are unique environments that usually have a variety of uses responsible for their creation. Many times our clients want the American Aquatics staff of fishery biologists to assess the status of the fish and fishing in specific lakes. We do this by seining, electrofishing and netting the fish to determine numbers, sizes, population structure, reproduction, recruitment and growth.

AMERICAN AQUATICS will design a creel survey to determine the impact of fishing on your fish populations. When we combine the fish population data and the creel data we will formulate a fishery management plan to meet your specific needs and objectives. You may want to catch trophy bass, big catfish or flyfish for bluegill. It is your lake and we will help you achieve the type and quality of  fishing experience that YOU want. We do this by combining the management techniques that will best meet your objectives. These may include fertilization, harvest restrictions, length limits, stocking, habitat  enhancement, forage fish introductions or other relevent management alternatives. We are guided by the principle that we can assist nature better and be more cost effective than manipulating nature.

AMERICAN AQUATICS is experienced in restoring habitats in streams and lakes. Through time, stream banks erode, spawning habitat is covered, nursery habitat is last, wood structure deteriorates or these things never existed. We will design a habitat plan to meet your needs.

AMERICAN AQUATICS has quickly established a reputation of scientific reliability. We have contracts with several government agencies; including the Tennessee Valley Authority, U.S. Fish  & Wildlife Service, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory; to provide extremely high quality data in the areas of fish population assessments, fish tissue collections for hazardous and radionuclide analysis and assessments of ecosystem recovery. In the past two years, we performed this work in several hundred lakes and streams.
