Contaminated Sampling

BIOLOGICAL SAMPLINGS IN CONTAMINATED ENVIRONMENTS

Biological sampling in contaminated environments is a difficult and often times dangerous situation.  Depending if the contaminants are hazardous or radiological, there are certain elements of risk to the sampling crew.  Simply the organisms to be sampled and/or the conditions may pose unique challenges for collecting the  samples.

AMERICAN AQUATICS is experienced in dealing with the challenges of biotic sampling in contaminated environments.  We have collected a wide variety of organisms for numerous studies such as risk  assessments, RCRA/CERCLA, fish consumption advisories, hunting consumption risks, clean up evaluations and routine monitoring at contaminated sites.

Our staff are 40 hour HAZWOPER trained, RAD WORKER II  trained, under medical surveillance and experienced in working in these conditions.  We have collected tissues from lake fish, stream fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, deer, rabbits, earthworms, bird eggs and birds.  The tissue samples we collected have been analyzed for heavy metals, organic compounds, radionuclides, and biotic contamination.

AMERICAN AQUATICS has sampled fish in public waters to secure  lakes contaminated with radionuclides and hazardous wastes.  We have sampled animal tissues in public areas to assess the success of clean up operations.  We monitor fish, benthic macroinvertebrates and wildlife to monitor clean up activities.

Our biological lab is licensed and routinely handles samples that are potentially contaminated with hazardous and radioactive wastes.  We have the necessary experience and procedures in place to deal with these type samples.
